This is the final report of the results of the survey conducted by APHAx as part of the process of bidding for funding for the Public Hall Annexe.

Questionnaires

1,200 questionnaires were delivered to households in Audlem and Buerton on 14th April 2014 (Hankelow addresses were delivered a little later). In addition, the local website (www.audlem.org) invited readers to complete the questionnaire on line. The questionnaire was designed to gauge people's support and preferences for the proposed Annexe to Audlem Public Hall.

At the time of this report 408 questionnaires have been returned (295 paper forms and 113 on line responses)

Who returned the questionnaires?

Predominately residents of Audlem (80%), with Hankelow and Buerton responsible for 7% each. Returns from outside of the three parishes (6%) have been included as they were from people in surrounding areas (Hatherton, Woore, Lightwood Green etc) who could use Audlem Public Hall.

Replies came fairly evenly from men and women (46% and 54%), although 5 people were undecided. 43% of all respondents were over 65. The average age of those who returned the questionnaires was 59, and the age range was from 11 to 92. It is interesting to note that the average age of those who completed the questionnaire on line was 54.

Despite the high age profile, 82% of respondents took part in sport or exercise, with the most popular activity being walking/hiking followed by gym/fitness classes and cycling.

A very high proportion (93%) visited the Public Hall on a regular or occasional basis reflecting the importance of the Hall in the community. Support for the proposed Annexe by ADCA was highlighted by the large response (45 returns) from people associated with that organisation.

Preferences

There was overwhelming support for the proposed Annexe. People were asked to give a preference for specific aspects of the project on a scale of 1 – 5, and the results for those giving a mark of 4 or 5 (important/very important) were:

Lounge and Dining Area for older People's Day and Lunch Clubs90%
Dedicated room and facilities for a Youth Club87%
Changing rooms and showers for football, cycling and other sports85%
A Therapy/Treatment Room for Health Professionals78%
Enhanced area for 5As for rehearsal and costume change74%
A gym/fitness room commercially operated and equipped58%

Whilst the lower level of support for the gym/fitness room could have been expected, bearing in mind the age profile of the respondents, 65% of people who answered this question said they would use a gym either regularly or occasionally.

Comments

There were 235 comments on the project, of which 97% were supportive. Only 8 comments (3%) were critical of the scheme, with the main concern being running costs.
Most comments were overwhelmingly enthusiastic

  • Excellent Excellent Excellent
  • Absolutely vital, in my opinion, to have such an Annexe. Great idea!
  • Very important and an asset to the village
  • Communities need community facilities paid for through taxes in one way or another. Young people, in particular, need every support to develop the habits of a health promoting, creative lifestyle.
  • Many old people, having lost a life partner, need a place to chat and socialise

Some concerns were raised about car parking:

  • I am in favour of the proposal but it would create further problems. We need more car parking space.
  • I suggest a road behind the football field down to Moss Hall field by the canal which would be ideal
