Sunshine and Spring Chickens!

I hope you all had a wonderful, sunny Bank Holiday weekend. It has certainly felt more like summer recently and we are all keeping our fingers crossed that the sunshine lingers for the rest of this term.

To ensure all of the children can enjoy the sunny weather safely, I would like to remind all parents of the Suncare Policy and summary letter available on our school website. Many children have arrived to school without hats or suncream this week – I would like to remind all parents and carers that children are asked to bring hats, suncream and sunglasses to school on days when the UV index is forecasted to be 3 or above (this includes cloudy days and particularly between 11am and 3pm).

The sun protection guidance we give to children are:

  • Seek shade.
  • Slip on sun protective clothing.
  • Slap on a hat – All children are required to wear hats that protect their face, neck and ears (legionnaire, broad-brimmed or bucket hat), whenever they are outside. Peak caps and visors are not considered a suitable alternative. Our school uniform provider, School's In, will soon be stocking school logoed legionnaires hats for this purpose for use in the summer months.
  • Slop on sunscreen – Parents/Carers must provide their own SPF30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water resistant sunscreen. Children are asked to apply sunscreen before coming into school, which should protect them for morning break. Children are reminded to apply suncream to specific 'vulnerable' areas such as tops of ears, neck.
  • A practical approach toward the application of sunscreen will be necessary, with assistance provided where necessary, unless instructed otherwise by the parent.
  • Slide on sunglasses – Where practical children are encouraged to wear close-fitting, wrap-around sunglasses and cover as much of the eye area as possible.
