It's been Maths and more Maths this week

  • Amethyst class have been making biscuits looking at weight and the numbers on the scales.
  • Sapphire class have investigated 2D and 3D shapes and explored a variety of resources to design and build a wheeled-vehicle for a character in a story.
  • Pearl Class have linked their maths work to their 'Inventors' topic and have investigated what makes objects move. Using Lego bricks the children built a Pull-robot that can pull an object over a short distance. The children tested to see how much the Pull-robot could pull before it stopped.
  • Amber class enjoyed a session of programming Scratch. The class used maths to help code Scratch to complete various tasks and developed an insight into how maths is used in Computing.
  • Emerald and Amber classes welcomed visitors from Liverpool University who showed them the maths behind game shows. The children pitched their mathematical knowledge against their teachers; the children were the winners! (Ed – well, what did you expect?)
  • Ruby class were inspired by the work of a 'real life' engineer following Mrs Marshall's visit to their class – Mrs Marshall, who is a Mechanical Engineer, set the children different engineering and mathematical challenges.
  • Diamond class enjoyed a visit from a software engineer to learn about how maths is used to operate software all around us.
  • Year 6 had a go at building their own bridge using metal rods, spanners, nuts and bolts and had to work together to work out how to create the strongest structure.

To end the week, Year 6 had an interesting visit to Newcastle College Lego Innovation Centre.
