Being World Book Day, it's timely to let you know that Combermere Abbey is being promoted as part of the Historic House Association's 'Literary Trail' which promotes many privately-owned historic houses, and their association with literary figures, as part of Visit England's 'Year of Literary Heroes'.

The Abbey's fascinating journey through time, has resulted in many interesting and fabulous folk passing through the gates, and for the Literary Trail we have promoted guest, Dr Samuel Johnson, who stayed in 1774 as part of his North Wales Tour.

Dr Johnson was a prolific author, literary critic, and essayist, yet is most revered for his work as a lexicographer, and his acclaimed 'A Dictionary of the English Language' was published in 1755, referred to as 'one of the greatest single achievements of scholarship.

More about this and other aspects of the Abbey's 900 year history can be discovered on an Abbey Tour, these commence on 4th April and run through to 6th July, taking place each week on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
