STEM Week and More!

It has been STEM Week in school this week with each class exploring the wonders of science, technology, engineering and maths. It has been wonderful to visit classrooms and speak to the children about their learning in STEM subjects in so many ways.

On Monday all of the children enjoyed workshops with Mad Science which inspired them to realise that Science is all around us. Many thanks to Friends for subsidising these workshops to make them affordable for all children.

Here are a few 'snapshots' from each class:

Amethyst class

Really enjoyed their Mad Science visit and the children have had lots of fun making and exploring slime. They have also been superheroes and have used magnets to rescue other superheroes. They were able to find out what materials were magnetic. Finally they built houses for The Three Pigs and used a hairdryer to test how strong they were.

Sapphire class

Have had a fantastic week. On Monday, Mad Scientist Indie taught everyone how a butterfly uses its proboscis. The children used pipettes to transfer nectar from different places around the room.

Pearl class

Identified and named different sources of light discovering that light sources vary in brightness and white light can be split into different colours of the spectrum. They created shadows understanding that a shadow is the absence of light.

Amber Class

Enjoyed a session with the Mad Scientists investigating bugs. Children used microscopes to get a close-up view of different insects before looking at adaptations and 'designing' their own bugs!

Emerald class

Explored how static electricity travelled through the air and objects. We used a variety of materials to see which would hold the most static electricity from balloons to static meter. We then tested how much static electricity was in our hair using a Van de Graaff generator.

Ruby class

The children mapped out their taste-buds and had a go at sweet-making. They were also introduced to the eight planets of our solar system and wrote descriptive sentences about each of them.

Diamond Class

STEM Week began with a visit from Mad Science. The children learned how to build models of molecules by looking at the atoms and bonds between them, then learned how to combine different liquids to create their own silly putty. There were lots of sticky hands by the end!
