Apples have had a tough time this year with the lack of water, but there one variety- shown which has managed to produce a decent crop, its a dessert (not desert) apple "Charles Ross"

It's also useful for cooking since the flesh stays in tact, having an almost pear-like flavour when cooked. The skin has orange flush & broken red stripes over greeny yellow background with some russetting. It is aromatic, firm and juicy, with a coarse texture. Picked in September, it is usually ready to eat in October onwards after maturing and keeps well. However this year we are eating them now, and it's one of my favourites. 'Charles Ross', the apple, was raised in England and first exhibited in 1890. Parentage: Peasgood Nonsuch crossed with Cox's Orange Pippin, from where it gets is aromatic flavour. This apple was raised by Charles Ross head gardener at Welford Park, Newbury, Berkshire who originally named it Thomas Andrew Knight after the president of the London Horticultural Society (1811 to 1838). Under that name it was awarded the RHS Award of Merit in 1899 and then  renamed Charles Ross.

There will be a few of these apples on the market this week.

The beans are coming to an end, so we might have a few, there may also be tomatoes and courgettes. There is now a fine selection of Jams, Jellies, marmalades and Chutneys to choose from. 

With a bit of luck we will have some cakes.

There will be some cooking apples as well, and freshly made apple juice from them and other varieties.

We have Honey and beeswax products for sale, not forgetting our free range eggs which sold out by 11am last week, the hens have been busy this week, so we should have enough. 

If you need a bit of autumn colour in your window boxes or garden plots, we have a good selection of perennials, and here's the hard bit, keep them alive so they will flower and prosper next year as well, advice will be given on the best practice.
