We were visited recently by Brian Le Masurier, who was evacuated to Audlem from Guernsey with his sister in 1940.

The Channel Islands were of course the only occupied part of Britain during the second world war.

Brian was in Audlem for about three years from the age of five, and remembers Audlem fondly, and commented that he enjoyed his time here.

Brian stayed with H Kingsley Burton and family at Laurel Grove on the Woore Road, but was mainly looked after by daughter Marjorie. Kingsley Burton was the owner of Kingbur Mill on the canal wharf, now known as Audlem Mill.

Brian's sister Renee, who was a year older than him, lived with a different family somewhere else in Audlem (he doesn't remember the details).

Brian, who also visited Laurel Grove when he was here, has written some notes about his time as an evacuee. (attached pdf file)

Brian Le Masurier believes that some other children from Guernsey were evacuated to Audlem, and would be glad to hear more about them and their hosts in Audlem.

Please contact us initially at Audlem Mill on 01270 811059 or info@audlemmill.co.uk and we will relay the information to Brian.
