A vet from a Market Drayton-based veterinary group has been thanked by firefighters for helping to save a horse trapped in a brook.

Fire crews from Newport and Wellington pulled the distressed horse from a brook after a call from a passer by.

Vet Paula Scales, from The Tern Veterinary Group based at Market Drayton, sedated the horse before specially trained firefighters lifted it out with animal rescue equipment.

A Shropshire Fire Service spokesman said: "A big thank you to Tern Vets in Market Drayton who sent vet Paula Scales to assist in the incident."

Fortunately, firefighters from the Wellington Station had already received intensive training in the use of the specialist equipment when dealing with large animals.

A year ago Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service purchased a rescue training mannequin horse, named Bulls-eye, designed to be used for training.

With its fully articulated head, neck, and limbs the mannequin horse can be used for firefighter training in a wide variety of rescue situations.

Shropshire Fire Serves says its crews now have a greater awareness of animal behaviour and, with the support of animal rescue equipment and training, have improved safety and the outcomes for incidents involving large animals.

The Tern Veterinary Group has been based in Stafford Street, Market Drayton for nearly 100 years. In 2000 they opened a building to cater for large and small animals at a branch surgery at Newport.
