Saturday 11th June

Karen Mason is leading the Long ARS walk next Saturday 11th June, leaving Audlem Car Park at 8.30 am.

The walk includes Pen-y-Cloddiau, Moel-y-Parc and Moel Arthur.

We return to the Clwydian Range for this walk. It begins in Llangwyfan forest car park (no charge, no toilets).
We climb steadily along the edge of the forest to reach the hilltop of Pen-y- Cloddiau, encircled by Iron Age earthworks. We follow the Offa s Dyke path across open moors with good views on a clear day across the Vale of Clwyd and Denbigh moors to the peaks of Snowdonia in the distance. At the end of Pen-y-Cloddiau there is the option of a there-and-back ascent to the trig point on Moel y Parc with views across to the Wirral and the Lancashire coast.
The route then heads back towards Llangwyfan forest on a level path, this time contouring Pen-y-Cloddiau. We reach a point within a mile and a half of the car park (with the option of a short-cut if you ve had enough) before continuing on a long, steady ascent towards the saddle between Moel Arthur and Moel Llys-y-coed. We stop for lunch towards the end of this ascent. From the saddle it s a short, steep climb up to the trig point on Moel Arthur followed by a short, but fairly steep descent, back to the car park.
A handful of dog-friendly stiles and plenty of sheep but no cattle on the recce.
9.5 miles 4-5 hrs. Total ascent 524m/1719ft. Max elevation: 456m/1496ft.
Journey from Audlem 1hr 15mins. Meet at Audlem car park to leave promptly at 8.30am. Car park is at Coed Llangwyfan CH7 5RP. The approach is via a long, narrow lane (with passing places).
