It was a day of high stakes, intense sibling rivalry, and superb sportsmanship at the Crewe Bowling Club this past Sunday, July 5th, as bowlers from across the region gathered for the prestigious Annual Cancer Cup. Sponsored by the South Cheshire Bowling League, the event raised vital funds for Cancer Research UK, proving once again that our local bowling community has as much heart as it does talent.
The atmosphere was buzzing from the get-go. By 9:30 AM, well ahead of the 10:00 AM start, a crowd of over 30 eager entrants was already queuing and registering, keen to make their mark on the green. With a strict straight knockout, 21-up singles format, there was absolutely no room for error. Every single wood counted.
The draw threw up a theatrical twist in the very first round, pitting Adam Thelwell of the Audlem and District Bowling Club against his own brother, Ben also of the Audlem and District Bowling Club. It was the match everyone was talking about.
What followed was an absolute cliffhanger. The crowd fell into a hushed, respectful silence with every end played, the tension thick in the summer air. Every precise bowl was met with collective gasps of appreciation from the spectators. Ben put up a fiercely stiff challenge, refusing to give an inch, but under intense pressure, Adam showed nerves of steel to narrowly overcome his brother with a thrilling 21 19 victory.
Adam s brilliant run carried him all the way through the grueling knockout stages to the grand final, where he faced off against the formidable Jason Williams of the Malbank Bowling Club.
It was a showcase of spectacular bowling. Adam fought valiantly, trading brilliant shots with the Malbank man in a fiercely contested battle. Ultimately, it wasn't quite to be a fairy-tale finish for Audlem, as Jason Williams edged ahead to take the title 21 17 in a grand finale worthy of the occasion.
While the competitive spirit was fierce, the real winner of the day was charity. With entry fees set at 5.00, 50% of the day's proceeds were donated directly to Cancer Research UK, with the remaining half forming the prize pot split between the worthy semi-finalists, the runner-up, and the champion.
Our picture shows Marion presenting the hard-earned winnings to the finalists, capping off a spectacular day of local sport.
Huge congratulations to Jason Williams – right, and a massive well done to our very own Adam Thelwell – left, for making Audlem proud on the big stage!
