Audlem Public Hall is about to “shake, rattle and roll” – hopefully without what followed some screenings of the 1950’s film “Rock Around the Clock”, featuring Bill Haley and His Comets. Numerous cinema around Europe, including the UK, were wrecked when the movie sparked riots by Teddy Boys, clashes with police and significant damage in cinema auditoria.
Such was the start of the Rock & Roll era, the topic which retired business and professional men and women members of Audlem & District Probus Club will hear all about this Thursday. (Some are rumoured to be dusting off their blue suede shoes, ready to dance in the aisles!)
Our guest speaker, Pete Graham, is about to take us on a trip down memory lane, revisiting hits of the ‘50s and ‘60s. Pete describes his talk, “The Birth of Rock and Roll”, as a musical journey describing the origins, pioneers and major stars of this early period of “rock and roll”.
Pete, from Macclesfield, a retired Design Team manager with a major multinational engineering research company, maintains his interests in gardening, photography, portrait painting and, of course, music. As well as reflecting on the development of “rock and roll” as a musical genre, he will be playing some of the hits of such stars as Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and The Beatles, among others.
He adds: “Singing along is compulsory – dancing is optional!”.
