History

Mothers' Union is a Christian organisation which began in England in 1876 when Mary Sumner felt it important to offer help and support to mothers and their children. The movement spread rapidly and there are now over 4 million members in 83 countries.

The work we do

In the UK the work is varied – caring for people locally, prison visiting, knitting for the neo-natal ward for premature babies, Parenting courses, giving packs out at Wedding Fairs, supporting local children's groups ........ and raising money to send to other countries where the local MU workers know what the needs are and how they can be met. Counselling and practical support for families affected by HIV/AIDS is very important in many areas, the supply of mosquito nets, Parenting courses, education, especially for girls, and many other family orientated concerns. In Uganda, for instance, husbands allow their wives to go to Mothers' Union meetings because they know it is 'safe' and the women are so proud that they wear a full dress uniform! We make do with a badge.

St James Mothers' Union

Here at St James our friendly meetings are usually on the 4th Thursday of the month at 2pm in church. Our programme varies from the serious to the hilarious (we were taught how to knit with plastic cut from old shopping bags a few weeks ago!) At present we have 28 members including married, single, men, women, parents or not, divorced. You would be most welcome to join us to enjoy the fellowship – and tea.

Next meeting

Our next meeting is on Thursday 23rd February 2pm in St James when Fr Alan Mumford will be talking on "Jesus the Jew." Watch this space for details of our next activity.

You would be most welcome to come as a guest.
