Chester Cathedral Falconry Centre and Nature Gardens Opens on Saturday 18th July 2015

Chester Cathedral has announced the brand new Falconry Centre and Nature Gardens will open on 18th July 2015. The bespoke Falconry Centre is the first of its kind in the city and is based within the cathedral grounds, set in a historic walled garden on the Dean's Field.

The centre had to satisfy numerous applications and scheduled ancient monument consent and final planning permission was received in February 2015.

Canon Peter Howell-Jones, Vice-Dean of Chester Cathedral, says of the new project, "Chester Cathedral is proud to be promoting the tourism economy of the city and this development represents several years of incredibly hard work.

Falconry was, of course, a medieval past time and our new centre is in perfect keeping with the cathedral's roots as a medieval Benedictine abbey."

Chester's first dedicated centre for birds of prey will open under the leadership of renowned falconer and conservation expert, Tommy McNally, who has over thirty five years of experience in falconry and wildlife management. Joining him will be Sophie Pegg, a specialist in animal management, behaviour and welfare. Together they will run a specialist team with a strong focus on conservation and education.

The birds of prey on display will include falcons, kestrels, eagles, vultures and owls and the site will include a number of aviaries, purpose built to ensure the security and comfort of the birds.

The nature gardens will feature bird boxes and bug hotels set amongst a stunning backdrop.
Here visitors will be able to watch our close encounter demonstrations, learn more about natural habitats and pick up expert tips on how to develop their own gardens to welcome bees, butterflies and wild birds.

Tommy McNally, Falconry Manager, says, "I have a passion for wildlife conservation but I am especially devoted to birds of prey. This centre will welcome families, children and young people and allow them to get close to and hold these magnificent birds in a magical setting in the heart of the city."

The Chester Cathedral Falconry Centre and Nature Gardens will be open during the summer months from Monday – Sunday 10.00am – 5.00pm and from
10.00am – 4.00pm during the winter (October to March).

Entrance fees are £3.00 (adults), £2.50 (children up to the age of 16) and £10.00 (family ticket for two adults and up to three children).
The entrance fee entitles visitors to explore the centre and nature gardens, visit the birds of prey and watch a daily outdoor flying display.

Flying displays featuring owls, hawks and falcons will take place daily at 1.00pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm (weather depending).

The centre will offer a number of birds of prey experiences for individuals and small groups.
