Many will have noticed that Audlem's Public Toilets on the car park in Cheshire Street have been closed since early last month.
The good news is that work will soon start to fully refurbish the building and the village will have a much improved facility that, even in its recent tired state, was much in demand by visitors.
Audlem Parish Council is taking over responsibility from Cheshire East Borough Council, who no longer regard public toilets as a mandatory service they need to provide. Funding has, however, been obtained to refurbish the building.
Parish councillors Mike Hill and Bill Consterdine are overseeing the project and quotes are being obtained from local contractors. It is planned that refurbishment work will be complete by the end of June in time for major events such as the Transport Festival.
Rather than the small, cramped facilities previously on offer, the new plans use the whole building again with greatly enlarged ladies, gentlemen's and disabled facilities. The unpopular, nay fearsome, automated ladies' toilet will disappear and be replaced by something more conventional and, naturally, convenient.
It's also planned that the toilets will be free albeit an honesty box is being considered to help defray the expenses.
More on this vital facility for visitors and residents as work progresses.
