Colchicums

Every year at about this time our garden is awash with the fabulous colour of Colchicums (Automn Crocus). We tell our friends about them but are often met with blank stares as few people appear to have heard of them.

This unusual plant grows its leaf in spring and then dies back only to re-emerge as a fabulous flower (no leaves) in early September. We have hundreds popping up all over the garden lawns, borders and edging, providing a real splash of colour at a time when so much is lacking. It's a bulb we bought many years ago, that we have planted wherever we have lived, taking a few with us each time we moved and all we have now have come from the initial bulbs purchased all those years ago.

As can be seen from the photo, in spite of the very dry summer the Colchicums have re-appeared, better than ever.
