The Lord Combermere Pub wants to build a new external canopy for smokers and replace some of its timber windows.

But as the village centre pub is within the Audlem Conservation Area it will need planning consent to make the changes.

According to the planning application submitted to Cheshire East Council the proposal is to replace the existing first floor windows that overlook the The Square and to construct a new external canopy over the existing raised patio area currently used by smokers and also used as a stage area for events held throughout the year.

The proposed new canopy would have a slate roof and it would replace the existing umbrella-like canvas structures.

The application says the pub's existing roofs have different eaves levels and this adds to the overall character of the building.

It adds: "The proposed roof eaves' height will be set at a similar level to the car park entrance which will give some continuity to roof levels at this point and keeping the form simple not too fussy."

The application claims the proposed canopy will not be seen from The Square elevation because it is behind the existing main entrance canopy and so it should "have little or no impact on the setting or general character of the street."

The design of the first floor replacement windows is intended to match the Georgian bars sash timber, stained brown so they won't look any different, but they would be double glazed.

The plans, submitted on March 7, will not go before the council planning committee but will be decided by a council planning officer under delegated powers. A target decision date has been set for May 2, 2013.
