The scouts are working towards their Media Relations and Marketing badge. This week the report writing team, the Cobra Troop, were tasked with writing a report about Scout Camps. Here's what they had to say'
A District Camp is where the whole District (SWC) meets. At District camp there are loads of fun activities like climbing, crate stacking, orienteering, air rifles, archery, back woods cooking and loads more. This is good because it lets loads of different people meet. I would like to do more of these because some activities you do not do too often.
On survival camp you have only a few basics items and the rest YOU have to do, such as cooking with a wood fire, backwards cooking, skinning animals, learning how to use axes, tomahawk throwing, making camp gadgets using pioneering skills, hikes, and more. it is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and meet other scouts.
I would like to go on greenfield camp because you are put in a field with one water pipe for all the camp. You don't have any showers or flushing toilets. You do lots of hikes and outdoor cooking for the whole Scout camp.
I would like to do a lot more activity camps with activities such as zip wire, caving, pot holing, archery & climbing. All the activities are really fun. I would like to do activities because they are fun and a good experience. it will help everyone improve in all the different things and get more badges.
Cheshire scouts hold many types of camps throughout the year, from back to basics survival camps, to larger district and county run camps, packed full of all kinds of different activities, from raft building, climbing, slippery pole challenges, traditional scout skills and outdoor cooking, to zip wires, high wire courses, caving simulators, zorb football, sailing, paddle boarding and tonnes more. Our scouts are into the third year of competing in the Cheshire Hike, which tests the skills they learn at camps and during Hike practices to their limits.
We have also competed in Monopoly Live, organised by Crewe Lions, where scout teams follow clues to travel their way around a pictorial monopoly board, sending them to many locations around Crewe. If they get caught hanging out in McDonalds however, they get sent to jail and need to earn a get out of jail free card at the local police station. The Scouts really enjoy the challenge whilst raising money for various local charities. Last year the Scouts got a taste of a traditional scout camp, nick named 'Survival Camp' where they had to learn how to survive, Baden Powell style!! (Or Bear Grills style, if you want to be bang on trend, since he is our Chief Scout!)
This year we are doing something Audlem Scouts have never done before. A small number of our scouts are venturing across the water for an international trip to Normandy with other Scout Troops and Explorer Scouts from Cheshire. Readers may remember us raising funds for this in the past. Thanks to a very generous donation from one local resident in particular, this trip has been made possible, bringing the cost of the trip down considerably. A massive thank you from us again for this, we really do appreciate it. As a Scout group, we would like very much to go on more camps and have more nights away, so our fundraising for this year is directed mainly on raising funds for a kit box trailer. While the leaders concentrate on doing training and getting their relevant permits in order to be able to take the Scouts, Cubs and Beavers away, without having to rely entirely on county events.
If you are interested in learning more about Audlem Scouts, want to join or help volunteer, you can find our details in the AudlemOnline Directories section under groups, then Young People, or alternatively just enter "scout" in the search box on the Home page and you will see all the items connected with scouts..
The Kestrel Troop made this weeks video, hopefully the tech team will be able to work it so that these can be published too (Ed: we're working on it).
