The Burleydam WI's May meeting is usually given over to the discussion of the resolutions that will be voted on at the AGM of the National Federation of Womens Institutes.
This year Burleydam had the help of Sybil Graham, who is the resolution member on the Cheshire Federation executive, and she led the discussion on the two resolutions which were about mega farming and the closure of libraries.
The resolution on the large farms, which urged the government to ensure that planning permission was not granted for such projects, led to lively discussion. It was felt that the use of 'factory farming' in the wording of the resolution was both emotive and perjorative.
It was questioned what alternative was there, given the inability of smaller dairy farms to make a living producing milk. Within two miles of the Burleydam village nine farmers had given up producing milk. One comment was "Did we want to see Cheshire Cheese made from French milk". The meeting voted unanimously against the resolution.
The second resolution urged the government to maintain support for libraries and this also producd interesting and diverse views. It was suggested that libraries nowadays provide many other services than lending books, such as computers and meeting places for young people. This resolution was voted for.
Our delegate to the National AGM, which this year is to be held in Liverpool, will give our votes on theses resolutions.
