The birds, the birds

Our thanks to those who sent in sightings of those two avian signs of Spring – the swallow and the cuckoo.

John Vickers reported our first sighting of a swallow out at Bunsley Bank last week while Chris Lewis followed up with two swallows seen in Green Lane on Wednesday 17th April. We have since heard of swallows spotted on 13th April and, at the eastern end of the village, even earlier although we do not have the exact date.

On the Chatbox, Lawnman reported hearing a cuckoo down near the Weaver valley to the west of Audlem on Saturday. We had similar reports last year of a cuckoo in that area which was of particular interest as the bird has been noticeable by its absence from the Audlem area in recent years.

Whether any local small birds reading this will be quite so pleased by the cuckoo news is questionable. Perhaps they should keep an eye out for any suspiciously large eggs finding their way into their nest in the coming weeks.
