The Audlem Wildlife & Ecology Group (AWEG) visited Jackson's Marsh & Coppice on Friday 29th May.

We set off from Audlem Car park, the valiant seven, in pouring rain. Twenty five minutes later as we arrived at Jackson's Marsh & Coppice Car Park we were greeted by patches of blue sky and the promise of sunshine.

Crossing the wild flower meadow we had great fun, stopping every few steps to identify and note various flowering species from Mouse-ear to Buttercup (three varieties). There were also flowering grasses – Sweet Vernal, Crested Dogstail and various others. No rain and plenty of sunshine!

Magnificent, majestic trees welcomed us to the Coppice, where we were serenaded by a song thrush that seemed to have moved with us from the meadow. Now we moved through bluebells galore and there was plenty of evidence of badger activity and other birds trilled, including the call of a green woodpecker.

So to the marsh, where a strong boardwalk gives ease of access to view the wide range of water loving species – alder trees, tussock sedge, large bittercress and magnificent wild angelica to name but a few.

A really good time was enjoyed by all but lunch called. Just as we climbed back into our cars there was a brief heavy shower which did nothing to dampen the spirits as we went on to enjoy a fine lunch and chat in The Star at Copmere End.

AudlemOnline adds: The editor of AudlemOnline, who happens to chair AWEG, was scheduled to go on this trip but, to his eternal shame, wimped out because it was pouring down. So glad the hardy seven enjoyed the trip and the weather as it continued to pour down back in Audlem.
