Audlem W.I. June 4th Meeting

As the razor-sharp minds of members of Audlem W.I. are aware, wine and cheese are ageless companions, like aspirin and aches, or June and moon. Therefore this is the month when we roll up our sleeves and dedicate our perfectly proportioned bodies to 'Making the Most of Our Gardens.'

As a perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken, our June talk by Jane Allison on this very subject should stimulate all our senses into creating a garden to be proud of.

Jane Allison runs Mayfields Plants and Garden Design from her third of an acre garden in Stanthorne, Cheshire.

Her talk will be about looking at ways of maximising the potential of your garden, whatever its shape, dimensions and personal requirements. The talk begins with a look at garden designs from start to completion. Also covered are planting ideas, the use of containers and wildlife considerations – should be interesting to us all, regardless of the size of our gardens.

Remember it's also important to be aware of when to reign in this zealous horticultural enthusiasm, bear in mind a weed is merely a plant who's values are yet to be discovered, and if your knees are turning green by the end of the day you need to seriously re-examine your life!

Sadly I will be away for this meeting, basking in the sun on Tresco in the Scilly Isles, however, because June's monthly competition involves making a posy, and we all know we have several talented flower arrangers amongst us, I can hold my head up high by not coming second again!

For those ladies who have friends (or enemies, we're not proud! ) who would like to come to our Centennial Celebration talk on '100 years of Flower Arranging,' by the Flower Divas of Audlem, the few remaining tickets will be on sale at the ridiculously low price of £3.50 to include a glass of Pimms.

See, the generosity of our W.I. Committee knows no bounds!

Also, it would be much appreciated if those ladies who have put their names down for the visit to Gawsworth Hall, and have not yet paid their £7.00, bring their payments to Kath or Chris on Thursday, as their husbands are complaining that they need to eat again! A free glass of fizz and a piece of cake is included in this payment – we ladies know a good thing when it's offered!

The committee would also like to take this opportunity to thank those willing male helpers who desperately held on to their toupees as we all wrestled with the W.I. Gazebo on Carnival Day! Also thanks go to those ladies who once again gave blood, sweat and tears, to produce the splendid array of cakes for our W.I. cake stall.

They obviously approach baking with reckless abandon and turn out cakes with such professional ease and perfection that most of us are in awe! In my opinion a glass of wine handily placed beside the mixing bowl often helps and such were the high standards of their baking, that we sold out by 1.30 pm!

Personally I always think baking is like washing, the results are equally temporary, and I read recipes the same way I read science fiction. I get to the end and say to myself 'well, that's not going to happen!'

Now a gentle reminder that time is running out for entering a poem for the Cheshire Federation of Women's Institutes. I am delighted to say that Jessie has also entered, so Audlem now has two entries. It would be fantastic if others could put pen to paper and show The Cheshire Federation what a talented village group we are – as if they didn't already know!

Finally, Audlem W.I. will be running a tombola stall at Corbrook Court on the 25th July. I suppose technically, a raffle is 'gambling', but no-one seems to care, so if any members have any spare gifts, bottles, gold, silver or diamonds that they are willing to donate, please bring it along to the meeting.

I'll leave you with this thought; How is it that our memory is good enough to retain the least triviality that happens to us, and yet not good enough to recollect how often we have told it to the same person?

See you all in July.
