Audlem man, Michael Thompson, who has led a team of dedicated volunteers to save lives in his neighbourhood has been nominated for Volunteer of the Year in the Scottish Power-Trinity Mirror Your Champions Awards.

Michael Thompson has trained and heads up a team of six first responders in Audlem which has helped reduce fatalities and serious injuries in an area historically known to suffer with poor ambulance response times.

A headteacher by profession, Michael's work, along with that of his team, has offered aid and comfort to dozens of people during the gap between injury and rescue. His efforts have even been heralded by his peers, and he was honoured at the North West Ambulance Service's awards ceremony with the title of Community First Resonder of the Year.

At the event, community resuscitation manager Rob Hussey said: "Michael has been instrumental in gaining charitable status for his community first responder group in Audlem.  From this groundwork, he has been successful in gaining access to funding for a team vehicle.

"As a headteacher, he quickly adopted the promotion of basic life support tuition throughout his school, allowing staff and sixth formers to become trainers of this vital life skill. Working with his group and the local Audlem community, he has also assisted the Trust in the establishment of three public access defibrillators.

"While he has been heavily engaged with these activities, and his demanding work of a heateacher, he still finds time to respond as a CFR and spend some time as a family man.

"Michael gets on with his responsibilities quietly.  His determination for his group to be largely self-sufficient is highly noticeable and he's an example to other CFR goups on just what is possible with dedication and time."

Michael has worked with the Audlem first responders for the past two years.  Also on the current team are: Debbie and Andy Ruscoe-Icke, Jane Palin, Janet Ruscoe, Linda Cheetham and Helen Marsden.

Collectively, they have been praised by Tom Declan of London Road near Audlem.  He said: "The team arrives well in advance of ambulance and provides care and medical attention to residents.

"An ambulance may take up to 40 minutes to arrive but the team is there in five.  This was evident when my father collapsed – they were brilliant and certainly made a difference."
