Derek Inskeep was so fascinated by the story of the Wellington Bomber that crashed in a field at Bridgemere on October 28th 1944 that he wrote a book about it called Wings of White Linen.

This alludes to the fact that Wellington bombers were of a wire mesh construction which was covered in Irish Linen sewn over the structure by Cheshire woman from Cranage.

He told Burleydam W I members how the plane had been on a cross country exercise from its base near Banbury with a crew of six. It flew into a severe thunderstorm and the plane came down – the only survivor was the navigator.

Derek successfully researched the families of the crew members and felt that there should be a fitting memorial to them near the crash site. Through his efforts this was dedicated in October 2003

Karen Gee was the delegate to the CFWI Annual Council meeting at Winsford on the same day when the Cheshire resolution calling for the ban on Chinese lanterns was accepted. This will hopefully now go to NFWI AGM in the summer.
