On September 3rd the 1st XI entertained Wilmslow and were well beaten by five wickets in a low scoring match sponsored by Fox Vehicle Refinishing.

Skipper Chris Shenton won the toss and decided to bat.  Openers Andy Rothwell and Andy Capper looked confident until Rothwell was dismissed caught behind for 0 with the score on 2.   Matters got worse when two more quick wickets fell – Rich Wilson for a duck and Paddy Leese for just 4.  With the score on 21 for 3, it was a bad start for the hosts.  Things didn’t improve when the next three wickets fell for just 6 runs – Capper (11) Tom Kural (1) and Stuart Elkes (0).  When Neil Humphries was bowled for just 4, Audlem couldn’t believe what they were seeing on the scoreboard, which registered 32 for 7.

It was up to Shenton and Quama Matthews to stage some sort of resistance.  The pair did well, adding 55 runs before Matthews was unlucky with one that raised and hit the glove, the all-rounder making 31.  Next to go was Shenton without adding to the score, caught after skying one to third man.  A late wag of the tail from Phil Backes increased the score to 96 before the youngster was out caught.  The not out batsman was Lyndon Woodcock on no score.

With a total of 96 to defend, Audlem had no choice but to go out and have a go.  Opening bowler Elkes took the early wicket of Andy Dixon for just 2, baffling the batsman with swing.  This gave the hosts hope.  A run out was to see the demise of other opener Ed Rowe to take the score to 17 for 2.  When Tom Rowe was bowled by Humphries on the same score, a little bit of belief crept in.  However, alas, it was not meant to be as Rob Herriot and Steve Fulker rallied and saw the visitors within grasp of victory.  Eventually Humphries claimed both batsmen, Herriot caught by Shenton for 38 and Fulker caught by Leese for 26.  With the score on 95 for 5, it was up to new batsmen Jay Nararayayan and Max Harvey to see the game out.

It was a poor performance by Audlem and thoroughly deserved victory for Wilmslow, Audlem taking just 5 points and Wilmslow 25.
