Why do we have to pay for the new brown bins?

As promised by Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council, brown bins for compost were delivered yesterday to those Audlem households that had ordered them and were prepared to pay £22 a year for the service. A resident of Stoke-on-Trent, and a regular reader of Audlem Online, has contacted us to say that in the Potteries brown bins for garden waste are provided across the area at no charge to householders.

While our Borough Council will doubtless argue that it is up to each council how they recoup the cost of the bins, maybe C&NBC should be asked by Audlem Parish Council why we have to pay £22 a year and residents of the Potteries don't. The answer certainly isn't that they pay more Council Tax in the Potteries – quite the reverse.
