Update on village centre accident

We now have more information about the accident in the village centre this lunchtime which involved Audlem's Sid Seabridge and his carriage pulled by four horses. Sid and his carriage are well known locally and last year transported the judges between the Methodist Church and the Public Hall when Audlem was awarded the title of Northern Village of the Year.

Sid explained to Audlem Online that the youngest horse of the four was frightened by builders on Shropshire Street and started to speed up. Whilst Sid could control the direction of the horses he couldn't stop them. As they went down Stafford Street the horse, which was one of the rear two, slipped and brought down the other rear one. As the carriage came to a stop the horse was pinned underneath.

Both Sid and Sharon, who was on the carriage with him were unhurt, as were three of the horses. The one which fell was attended to by a vet away from the scene of the accident. Unfortunately, its injuries were serious and it had to be put down.

Local shopkeepers came to their assistance and halted traffic until the police arrived so that the situation could not get any worse. It is pleasing to note that both the ambulance service and the police were quickly on the scene. Fortunately no traffic was coming the other way, so an even more serious accident was avoided.
