Unusual find by ARS (Updated)

Audlem Rambling Society leisurely strolled around 10 miles of the Wyre Forest and the surrounding hills of the North Worcester countryside yesterday in glorious sunshine.

Several members of ARS with their red hair and red socks blended perfectly into the vivid forest blaze of Autumn colour.

On reaching a hilltop fence, and the first one up the hill, was Tag the dog, who sniffed at what seemed to be a grey plastic bag wrapped around some barbed wire. It was alive!

Chris and Will were next to the top and investigated. It was a Peregrine Falcon hanging upside down whose Jesse had become entangled in the barbed wire.

With a pair of motorcycle gauntlets, a sharp knife and some minutes of delicate carving, we were able to disentangle the bird and set it free.

Audlem Rambling Society was renamed for the day: Audlem Rambling and Raptor Release Society, or ARRRS.

Walk leader Peter Kay adds: "It was a wonderful day with marvellous  colour on the trees. The falcon was icing on the cake. I have never been so close to a bird of prey.

"I notice Chris used the words 'leisurely stroll'. Looking at the faces and hearing the comments of some of the party when they arrived back at the cars suggested that they would have jibbed at that description!"
