The speaker from the Cheshire Wildlife Trust, Sue Makin, kept members at the June meeting of Burleydam Womens Institute intrigued with the many and varied ways of encouraging wildlife into our gardens.

Sue, a microbiologist and mentor for organic gardens stressed the importance of not being too tidy in our gardens and to leave dead logs and vegetation for insects and small mammals to live in.

She suggested that we should clothe our fences with climbers to provide green corridors for birds and other creatures to travel down and turn our lawns into wild flower patches.

The Cheshire Wildlife Trust is a charitable organisation with 9,000 members which cares for 45 nature reserves in it's area. It works with other conservation bodies stimulating awareness of environment issues and advising and speaking out on planning matters to Councils.

The competition for the best tip to encourage wildlife into the garden was won by
