Concern has been expressed at the poor state of the illuminated speed warning signs on the road approaches to Audlem.
But Audlem parish councillors are unsure which agency is responsible for their maintenance or repair.
Councillor Phillip Johnson told a parish meeting of problems with speed warning signs on the village approaches from both Adderley and Whitchurch directions.
He claimed the 30mph speed warning lights had dimmed and were not as effective as they could be in warning motorists of their speed into the village.
He questioned who was responsible for their upkeep but councillors admitted they were baffled at who to contact about repairs.
They agreed to find out who was responsible for any repairs should the speed warning signs need attention.
AudlemOnline has asked Cheshire East Highways Service if they can throw any light on the matter after a quick scan of their website made no mention of traffic speed indicator signs.
But the website does indicate that temporary Speed Indicator Devices (SID) – those with the smiley or frowning face – are available for use by parish councils and recognised community groups on roads with a speed limit of 40mph or less.
They can contact the Highways Service in writing or by email (entering 'SID Request' in the subject field), or by letter.
Recent research has shown that speeds are reduced by an average of around 5mph at sites where SIDs are regularly used.
Cheshire East subsequently responded to AudlemOnline's query and contact details at Highways have been passed to the Parish Council.
