"You're never too old" must be the motto of a 96-year old boater who negotiated the fifteen Audlem locks single-handedly this week.
We are told he received friendly assistance from many other boaters and others on his way down the locks.
The passage through Audlem Locks was part of his trip from Birmingham towards the Llangollen Canal and the famous crossing of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct over the River Dee and built by Thomas Telford.
We liked the quip of one experienced boater who suggested our headline should be The Tale of the Ancient Mariner. As yet, however, no albatross!
