Pupils in Cheshire East are once again performing above the national average after chalking up some impressive GCSE results.

Provisional figures show that 63.6 per cent of pupils achieved five or more A*- C grades including English and maths, compared to the validated 61.5 per cent figure for last year.

The proportion of pupils gaining five A*- C grades in any subject is 71.1 per cent, maintaining last year's standard.

In English alone, 68 per cent of Cheshire East pupils gained a grade between A* and C, compared with the national figure of 65.4 per cent. Meanwhile, 67.5 per cent of pupils achieved between A* and C in maths, compared with 63.3 per cent nationally.

Audlem Councillor Rachel Bailey, Cabinet member in charge of children and families, said: "The young people of Cheshire East have excelled in their GCSEs again. I am delighted by this because GCSEs are so important and provide the platform for a young person's future, whether this is continuing education or employment.

"This is a very nerve-wracking time for youngsters but I really do hope that the sometimes agonising wait for results has been worth it.

"I want to thank families, teachers and schools' staff, who worked very hard to support our pupils and also the young people themselves, who continue to maintain a high success rate in Cheshire East."
