On Saturday a cold, cloudy, murky, late spring day saw the 2nd XI welcome Wilmslow Wayfarers to the Gorse Croft for the Division 4 fixture and come out winners by 3 wickets.

Skipper, John Wainwright lost the toss and the visitors decided to bat first on a slow, uneven wicket. Audlem's spin duo of Roy Wild and Lyndon Woodcock opened the bowling hoping to make an immediate impact. Instead, Wayfarers got off to a bright start as the pair uncharacteristically bowled several loose deliveries which were dispatched to the boundary. Wild eventually made the breakthrough, bowling Colin Miller for 25 to make it 37 for 1. Phil Mape joined Dan Toal at the crease and he launched a counter attack that forced Wainwright to take off his spinners. The score had raced to 96-1 and things were looking decidedly dicey for Audlem as a huge score loomed.

Enter Dave Parry, who began a match-changing spell of bowling. Mape, who had threatened to bat Audlem out of contention, was snared by Steve Ellsmore at gully off Parry for an ebullient 43 containing some huge sixes. It was a crucial wicket and his departure signalled the collapse of the visitors' innings. Parry wreaked havoc and was ably supported by the medium pace of Danny Thorburn at the other end. Parry ended up with 6-22 off 8.5 superb overs. Thorburn deserves credit for an excellent spell of 7 overs yielding 2-33. Wayfarers were bundled out for 144, losing their last nine wickets for just 48 runs.

In reply, Audlem's openers Zar Ahmed and Leo North, assisted by an extraordinary number of wides and no-balls, made an excellent start by adding 49 for the opening wicket until North was run out. One run later, Ahmed was caught off Daryl Stocker's bowling for 18. Danny Thorburn and Andy Jinks took the score to 68 before both were caught off Stocker's deliveries. When Ollie Banfield became Stocker's fourth victim five runs later, Audlem were in huge trouble. However, man-of-the-match Parry was still at the crease and there were some capable batsmen still to come. Unfortunately, when the score had reached 91, Steve Ellsmore was bowled.

Paul Thorburn joined Parry and they provided a match-winning partnership, taking the score to 126 before Thorburn was bowled for an excellent 21. Woodcock and Parry then added the remaining runs comfortably and Audlem ran out winners by 3 wickets. Parry remained 30 not out and Woodcock 10 not out. There were an amazing 47 extras!

Audlem gained 25 points and Wayfarers 10. Having lost their first three matches, the 2nd XI has now won two of the las three and drawn the other, rising three places to sixth place in the table.

Next Saturday, the 2nd XI are again at home, playing Appleton 4th XI, who are just two points and one place behind. The match starts at 2.00 pm.
