STOP4T for motorway safety day on 11th August

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service's Road Safety Team is hosting an exciting and fully interactive community engagement event which will take place in 5 sites across the M6 corridor in Cheshire.

The event will begin at 10am and finish at approximately 3pm across the five nominated sites; Sandbach South, Sandbach North, Knutsford North, Knutsford South and Lymm.

The key theme of the event is 'STOP4T,' a snappily titled safety initiative by Tyre Safe which aims to get road users to remember the six key safety lessons entitled 'Tyres,' 'Two seconds,' 'Tiredness,' 'Top up', 'Take care' and 'Towing.'

TyreSafe are urging drivers to check their tyres regulary to ensure they are safe, be careful whilst towing, top up their fuel tanks regularly, take regular breaks to avoid being tired at the wheel and to take care, generally, whilst driving.

The 'two seconds' lesson refers to the road safety version of the well known 'two second rule.' TyreSafe suggests using the time it takes to say the sentence: 'only a fool breaks the two second rule' to indicate whether you are a safe distance away from other vehicles.

Andrew Gray from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: 'I know I speak on behalf of all of my team when I say how much we are looking forward to hosting this event. We are extremely proud to be working in partnership with our colleagues from Cheshire Police and TyreSafe whose fantastic work helps to save thousands of lives every year by highlighting the dangers of unsafe tyres, spotting tyres that are unfit to be on the road, and teaching valuable road safety lessons to all road users."

All road users are invited to take part in a series of road safety activities, and will be given the opportunity to get their tyres tested, across all sites throughout the day.

Road users travelling to Sandbach South and Sandbach North can test their brake reaction speed and test whether their tyres have the right density using the site's 'large coin depth placard.'

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service's Fire Bike will tour all five sites across the day, starting at Sandbach North. The service's historic vintage fire engines will also travel across all sites throughout the day.

The GMC crash car will also be on display at Knutsford North and those travelling to Knutsford South can have a go on the GMFRS driving simulator.

The Think Car will be on display at Lymm as will another 'large coin depth placard' for testing tyre safety.
An advice forum will be set up on all sites giving users the opportunity to test and to top up their road safety knowledge and get advice from the service and nominated volunteers.

Highways England will also be in attendance to offer safety advice throughout the day.
