Spoonface Steinberg

I was intrigued when Trudy Chadnor from the Freerange Theatre company, based in Norton in Hales, approached me about promoting Lee Hall's Spoonface Steinberg here in Audlem.

This followed a recent Daystar Theatre performance at the Scout & Guide Hall Theatre Cafe venue here in Audlem, so taken with the atmosphere of the venue, and by the audience's appetite for theatre in their own village.

So a meeting followed: Trudy, and Director Hugo Chadnor, really wanted to fetch the play to a local venue during their production's summer tour. I knew of writer Lee Hall, mainly for his best known Billy Elliot (Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay, Olivier Award 'Best Musical and 9 Tony Awards, including Best Book).

More recently, the Pitman Painters earned him further acclaim (Winner of The Evening Standard Best Play Award). However, it was Spoonface Steinberg that attracted the most attention early in his career.

Need to know more

I needed to know more, so Hugo provided the synopsis: "A forty-five minute monlogue, it features actress Rebecca Fenwick who has to portray an autistic seven-year-old girl with cancer."

Well that sold it! However, lets not forget the brilliance that is the writer, Lee Hall, the direction of Hugo Chadnor and actress Rebecca Fenwick taking Spoonface's world and providing a unique insight into her situation at this low time of her life. This is done without any sense of mawkishness, enlightening without any sense of moral teachings, and moving without any sentimentality, a compelling piece of theatre.

This is a unique opportunity to see this "moving, funny, sad yet optimistic production", you will not regret your time spent with Spoonface Steinberg.
