With many of the regulars away in various parts of Wales, it was hardly a surprise that the Short-ARS expedition on Saturday was limited to just seven walkers and one dog – the other human, by the way, is taking the photograph!

At the upper limit of Short-ARS expeditions at seven miles, the circuit took in the mere at Ellesmere, rolling fields across to Welshampton and a return via the canal towpath which passes by two more meres.

The timing proved to be perfect – after excellent, indeed perfect, walking weather throughout the three hour hike, it started to rain just as the group returned to the car park.

ARS (Audlem Ramblers Society) walks are on the second Saturday of the month and are normally in the 8 – 12 (occasionally a little more) mile range in the likes of North Wales, Shropshire and the Peak District.

Short-ARS walks are typically 5 – 7 miles with few testing inclines, are within 30 minutes drive and are on the fourth (occasionally fifth) Saturday of the month.
