Seen elsewhere: Question of Virginity

We loved this story from Italy, seen during the week, as Italian olive oil makers have been accused of falsely labelling products as 'extra virgin,'

A prosecutor in Turin has opened an investigation into seven producers, including brands such as Carapelli, Bertolli and Primadonna, names that we suspect sit in most Audlem and district store cupboards.

Virgin and Extra Virgin olive oils must both be cold pressed but Extra Virgin needs to have an acid content below 0.8% while Virgin can be unto 2%. A tasting panel must also approve Extra Virgin to check it is free from hints of mould, fermentation or vinegar, which can be caused by dirty presses or the damp storage of olives.

Experts also claim that some Italian producers doctored last year's crop with low-grade foreign imports – foreign to Italy that is – after harvest fell by 35% after a cold Spring.

Another story that caught our eye. A councillor in Scotland involved in the closure of public lavatories was caught urinating in the street by police.

Jackie Burns, deputy leader of South Lanarkshire council, said he "went down a lane to relieve himself" while waiting for a taxi in Hamilton last Saturday. He was given a £40 fine for "taking the p--s".

In May, Mr Burns had announced that public conveniences in the area would close as part of the Scottish government's budget cuts.

Fortunately, any visiting Cheshire East councillors caught short who were involved in the closure of Audlem's public toilet five years ago will be relieved to know that the toilets, dramatically improved (with the financial help of Cheshire East Council, we have to add) were reopened some months later by Audlem Parish Council and are now amongst the finest in the land and Gold Award winners in the National Loo of the Year competition.
