When the children of Audlem St James' school sat down for their literacy classes this morning, they all wrote letters to Santa.

Little did they know what awaited at 1.00pm when they all went out to the school playing field.

As the roar of Santa's new conveyance was heard, the children started jumping up and down with excitement, screaming – they could possibly be heard throughout the village – and then, magnificently, Santa emerged from his helicopter to pick up those Christmas 'wish' letters.

With Flt Lt Mike Barnett at the controls, Santa had flown in from Lapland via Shawbury especially to visit the schoolchildren of Audlem. He greeted everyone of them and they then had a chance to go and inspect the helicopter themselves.

Amazingly, when a giant Chinook helicopter flew nearby a few minutes later, a rumour swept round that maybe Rudolph, with his reindeer friends and the sleigh, were heading to the school too. That, unfortunately, proved over-optimistic.

Given their excitement, the children behaved admirably throughout, possibly seeing the strong arm of the law in PC Sarah Marson and PCSO Nick Jarvis on hand – who also took the opportunity to pass on their Christmas wishes to Santa.

It was a visit the children, teachers and staff – one, as you can see in the perfect hi-viz jacket – will not forget in a long time.
