After last week's defeat, the 1st XI got back to winning ways at Mossley, with a three-wicket victory over the home side. The win keeps them in second place in Division 2 of the Cheshire Cricket Alliance.

Skipper Chris Shenton lost the toss and Mossley decided to bat. Audlem once again started with a mixture of spin from Lyndon Woodcock and speed from Stuart Elkes. The ploy worked well as Elkes trapped opener Matthew Ben-Accom with the score just 5.

When Phil Backes ran Tony Brown out and first-change bowler Kemal Toraman had Barry Carney caught by Richard Wilson, the score looked dismal 22 for 3. Olly Burney soon got in on the act when Tom Measures snapped up Skipper Ryan Walker, leaving the home side at 40 for 4.

Andrew Sadler and Keith Richardson took the score to 67 before Sadler hoit his own wicket to become Toraman's second victim. At the same score Toraman had Chris Lowe caught behind by Paddy Leese. Richardson and Tom Trevers made the score more respectable, taking the score to 101 when the returning Woodcock coaxed Richardson to go for a big hit only to be caught by Elkes for 32. Five runs later Toraman bowled Patrick Moss and Audlem were sensing a quick victory.

However Trevers and Gareth Cresswell had other ideas as they shared an unbeaten stand of 82 to leave Mossley 188 for 8 at the end of their 48 overs. Both batsmen were 42 not out. Toraman finished with 4 for 27.

In reply, Audlem's openers Shenton and Richard Wilson only took the score to 19 before Shenton was caught and bowled by Peter Stirk for 8. Thirteen runs later Wilson was caught for 20 off Stirk's bowling. Andy Capper and Burney had just seen the scoreboard record the half-century when Capper was bowled by Brown for 8.

Toraman joined Burney, but became Stirk's third victim, leaving Audlem on a shaky 66 for 4. Burney and Measures then shared a valuable stand of 60 which turned the game Audlem's way. Burney was then caught off Moss's bowling, having scored 41. Leese joined Measures, but was soon out, caught off Moss, with the scoreboard registering 138 for 6.

When Measures was bowled by Moss for 32 four runs later, Mossley had turned the game in their favour. However, an unbeaten stand of 50 between Andy Rothwell and Elkes saw Audlem past the winning post with one over remaining. Rothwell scored 34 and Elkes 14. Audlem gained 25 points and Mossley 14.

On Saturday the 1st XI entertain Ellesmere Port at the Gorse Croft. Play starts at 2.00 pm.
