Motorists urged to leave more time for journeys during Rood Hill roadworks in Congleton
Cheshire East Council is urging people travelling through Congleton to leave more time for their journeys as essential roadworks are carried out at the town's A34/A54 Rood Hill junction throughout August and early September.
Work is progressing well, although the Council recognises there have been significant traffic delays as a result. The authority is working extended hours from 8am until 8pm to complete the work as quickly as possible.
Once complete, residents should experience reduced traffic delays thanks to the use of smart technology to improve signal timings in line with changing traffic flows. The work will also replace outdated cabling in order to prevent faults.
One lane is currently closed with work due to be complete no later than Friday, September 4.
Councillor David Brown, Cabinet member for highways, said: "We fully recognise that traffic delays can be extremely frustrating, however this necessary work will improve traffic flow in this area in the long run as we know it is already a busy junction.
"There is never a good time to complete this type of work but we're doing it now, during the school holidays to minimise disruption as much as we can.
"We have specifically requested that gas mains work on Buxton Road and resurfacing on the A34 is rescheduled while we complete this work to keep disruption to a minimum.
"Although it is scheduled to end on September 4, we will do everything in our power to be off site sooner than that if we can. We thank motorists for their patience while this essential work is done and I would urge them to use alternative routes."
Cheshire East Highways staff are doing all they can to ensure traffic passes through the junction as swiftly as possible by monitoring traffic both on site and remotely. This means staff can adjust the phasing of the signals according to the amounts of traffic being experienced.
Local businesses remain open as usual and Cheshire East Highways is working with utility providers to coordinate the improvement scheme with utility works in the local area, to ensure that conflicting road works are avoided and alternative routes are available for motorists.
Throughout the duration of the improvements at Rood Hill, personnel will be available on site to provide help and advice to members of the public.
Minor road and pavement repairs will also be undertaken to maximise use of the road space, with an ongoing drainage problem also being rectified.
Up to date information about the Rood Hill works can be found on Cheshire East Council's website, with both @CheshireEast and @CECHighways tweeting updates as works progress.
Anyone with concerns regarding these works as they progress should contact the Cheshire East Highways Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5020.
