For some time, there have been major roadworks threatened for Wellington Road (the main A529 road from Audlem into Nantwich town centre) just before the level crossing in Nantwich.

These are now apparently scheduled to be started on February 18th (i.e. Thursday), and will last for three or four weeks. While the roadworks take place, traffic will only be able to travel South (i.e. towards Audlem) along Wellington Road, because it would clearly be dangerous to have temporary lights so close to the level crossing with the risk of traffic queueing back across the railway itself.

The originally recommended alternative route for northbound traffic during the closure is via Audlem Road, Peter de Stapleigh Way, Elwood Way, Newcastle Road, London Road, Pratchitts Row, Station Road. So far we have been unable to get a clear statement from the Gas Board (who are carrying out the works) to confirm this, but the obvious alternative would be to turn off the A529 going North towards Nantwich at First Dig Lane (signposted for Stapeley Water Gardens etc) and then follow the A51 and eventually London Road into Nantwich. The other option is to risk vehicle suspension and go up Coole Lane (take the A525 from Audlem towards Whitchurch and then turn right after crossing the river) and follow this up to Shrewbridge Road in Nantwich and across the level crossing that way.
