Our speaker this month was Jennifer Collier, who graduated in Textiles from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1999 and who now works as an artist undertaking commissions and teaching workshops.

Although she stitches, Jennifer rarely uses fabric in her work, preferring to employ found and recycled materials like paper and plastic and even slices of dried fruit!

Inspired by vintage clothing and artifacts, she likes to reconstruct garments, shoes and bags etc. in these unusual materials and she generously demonstrated some of her favourite techniques to the audience at the end of her talk.

She prefers to be viewed as a fine artist rather than a fashion designer, since her garments are not made to be worn and has made a name for herself making unique items to order for special occasions. Some of her work is currently on show in her new gallery and workshop, Unit12, in Tixall, Staffs. www.unittwelve.co.uk

Our next meeting, 17th June, will be "Naughty but Nice" by June Corner.
