Wild Bird Care -appeal by Suzzane Manser
Avoid cutting hedges between March and August, as this is the primary nesting season for birds and is often restricted by law to protect wildlife. It is also advised not to trim during extreme weather, such as heavy frost, severe drought, or intense heat, which can damage the plant.
Key Times to Avoid Cutting Hedges:
- March – August (Nesting Season): It is illegal in the UK to intentionally damage or destroy active bird nests, making this the most crucial period to avoid pruning.
- Spring Growth Phase: Cutting too early in spring can cut off new growth and disturb nesting wildlife.
- Extreme Weather: Avoid cutting in hot, dry weather to prevent scorching, or during freezing temperatures, which can damage exposed stems.
- Berry-Bearing Season (Late Autumn): While birds are safe from nesting disturbance, avoiding heavy cuts allows birds, such as fieldfares, to eat berries that help them survive the winter.
