Where did they all come from? That was the question everyone at last night's Bonfire & Fireworks event must have been asking. Was there ever a bigger turn-out for an Audlem event?

Even the hardened event organisers of ASET were astonished. Their reputation must have spread many a mile as people of all ages, families and teenagers arrived in the village in unprecedented numbers.

There's no official count as yet but many a Championship football team, never mind those from the lower leagues, would have been jealous of last night's gate as ASET, the Audlem Special Events Team, and Blitz Fireworks made it a display to remember.

Despite BBC forecasts of perfect weather, it managed to rain before and, more heavily, after the show. Fortunately, it was still and dry as seemingly thousands of rockets lit the Audlem sky.

It was all set to music, and beautifully synchronised too – even Handel would have been impressed. Mischievously, given the ManU-leaning inclinations of the chairman of ASET, the final blast of sound featured Gerry & the Pacemakers' legendary Liverpool FC anthem You'll Never Walk Alone, and a curiously effective fireworks finale it was too.

Audlem proved again that when it comes to events, this village punches as a true heavyweight. From the smiles on everyone's faces as they left through a packed fairground and stalls, most will be back again next year. ASET pulled off, once again, an amazing success.

Our thanks to Phil Baker for the splendid photos taken last night.
