"Road skimmer coming!"

Audlem Online received an email last night from Scotland – another land of wonderfully smooth roads, we were told – from Audlem-based local roads campaigner, Peter Oxley.

Regular readers will recall his email last week to a senior Highways officer commenting about the poor quality of the few repairs that were carried out on Friday following pressure from him and, possibly, this website.

Peter says Cheshire East have promised that they will organise a skimming machine to tackle the other road faults in 2-3 weeks.

We will wait and watch with interest.

Following our story on Monday from a resident about Coxbank's potholes being seen from Space, we must admit another light-hearted, but pointed, story had been planned for this morning.

Well, maybe it's still worth airing:

Divers search pothole for missing cyclist

A cyclist went missing after leading last night's ACC July Series road race around the Audlem area.

Ulysees P Andover, know to all as UP in the cycling world, had made a strong break-away to lead the race. It's thought he may have momentarily turned his head to assess that lead when he hit the massive pothole.

Up Andover, it's suspected, then lived up to his name, flew off his bike and simply disappeared. Race officials called in police divers to search the underwater caverns beneath the road without success.

We understand Highways officers are being asked if they explored the underwater network, now thought to be connected to the River Weaver, when they drew a white chalk mark around the pothole entrance six months ago.

Apparantly these chalk marks indicate the pothole has been reported and listed by Cheshire East for repair at some unspecified time in the future.

(But then again, maybe it shouldn't have been published and the editor should have kept it to himself!)
