Yesterday's story by David and Sarah about the damage caused to their car by a large pothole at Buerton has set minds racing at Audlem Online.

Pothole of the YearWe think a Pothole of the Year award is likely to be popular. It's an idea that's gathering momentum by the minute with award categories and prizes being planned.

The chief executive of Cheshire East could well be invited to present the awards at a gala event in the Public Hall. She did, after all, say in the press a year ago that she planned to visit Audlem. She hasn't, as far as we know, been this far south yet. The awards evening would be a perfect opportunity to meet local people (aka Council Tax payers).

Categories for the awards could include:

  • Width
  • Depth
  • Damage Caused
  • Left unrepaired for longest
  • Patched up most times
  • Potholed Lane of the Year
  • Overall 'Pothole of the Year'.
Early betting has the small pond outside the Fire Station at 4-1; the middle of Shropshire Street pothole outside the Undertakers at 5-1; Coole Lane and Paddock Lane fighting it out at 7-1 (but both at evens for 'Potholed Lane of the Year' award).

The Buerton pothole which David and Sarah hit, which in its various guises has been a problem for a long time, is coming through strongly at 8-1.

Tarmac, Michelin tyres or Kwikfit could well be approached as sponsors of the awards but any ideas from readers on this unique new event will be welcome.

Pothole SponsorshipOur underground reporter, 'The Mole', a specialist in holes in the ground, has also suggested that Audlem Dry Cleaners could sponsor some of the potholes in Shropshire Street. After all, splashed and sprayed pedestrians must be good for business. Just a thought!
