This week's Chronicle reports that a new 'superforce' combining Cheshire and North Wales has not been ruled out by Home Secretary, Charles Clarke. Mr Clarke was responding to a question in a House of Commons debate by local MP Stephen O'Brien.

Other merger proposals include amalgamating Cheshire Constabulary with Merseyside or Greater Manchester police. Mr Clarke said that "The crime market in North Wales and Cheshire runs from Liverpool to North Wales." He then made the situation crystal clear by saying: "I have said, and let me be quite clear about it, that I am not saying as an absolute requirement that a regional boundary is not crossed because there may be cases of the kind just made."
