Hundreds of local council workers are striking today over pensions rights in the Local Government Pension Scheme. Eighty per cent of Unison members are said to be backing the industrial action. The protest is because the Government has refused to give protection for existing members of the scheme in contrast, the union says, to the protection given to civil servants, teachers, police, firefighters and the NHS.

The strike is likely to affect schools, colleges, social services, council services and the work of civilians in the police and fire services.
