The 66th Birthday meeting of Burleydam W I got off to a good start on Tuesday with a glass of wine for the packed room of members and visitors.

Business was kept to a minimum and then a buffet supper of cheese and pate was served.

The speaker, Kate Cawley, having lost her way, arrived laden with bags and boxes full of her own handiwork. The title of her talk was ''Learning from your mistakes'' and she proceeded to show us toys, dolls, knitting and needlework that she had, through the years, entered into competitions at the Cheshire Show and at her own Institute.

There was the Noah's Ark full of pairs of animals, but they had wobbly legs and wouldn't stand up, so she only got 19.5 points out of 20. So the next year she made the legs of a reindeer with pipe cleaners and it stood up but the sleigh it was pulling let her down -19.5 again!

She showed us Enid Blyton characters made in felt, perfectly dressed – 20 points. A choir and their conductor – only 19.5 points. She kept her audience in stitches (!) with tales of her successes and failures, showing handcrafted perfect works of art.

She concluded her talk with a story against herself, when, having inadvertently sat on a crochet hook which stuck in her backside, it required a visit to A & E.

The telling of this tale finally brought the house down, and members and visitors agreed that it had been a very enjoyable evening.

The competition for a crafty idea was won by Liz Gentil, second was Elaine Walton.
