Christmas Safety Campaign kicks off with Santa warning about overloaded plug sockets

Cheshire firefighters have this week launched the start of a month of Christmas safety messages to keep residents safe.

Unfortunately, national statistics show that people are 50% more likely to die in an accidental house fire during the Christmas period than at any other time of the year therefore it's vital that people take extra care during this time.

In light of this fact fire crews want residents to take care while out on the road or at home during the festive season.

As people start to put up their Christmas decorations, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is kicking off its safety campaign with a warning about the dangers of overloaded plug sockets.

It's tempting to plug several sets of twinkly fairy lights into one socket and "make do" for Christmas, but overloaded sockets can quickly overheat and could lead to a serious house fire.

Head of Prevention and Protection Keith Brooks, said: "It's so easy to forget amidst all the festivities that tree lights and decorations present fire risks. We're asking people to take five minutes to have a look at our safety tips to help ensure that this holiday season is one to remember for all the right reasons."

  • 1. Check Christmas tree lights conform to the British Standard
  • 2. Outdoor illuminations should always use a residual current device (known as an RCD, it's a safety device that can save lives by instantly switching off the power)
  • 3. Don't overload plug sockets
  • 4. Switch off electrical appliances when not in use, unless they're designed to stay on; take special care with Christmas lights; always switch off and unplug Christmas lights before you go to bed
  • 5. Check the battery in your smoke alarm every week and use Christmas as a reminder to clean it and remove dust.

The Service will be using social media to promote safety tips throughout December. Residents can sign up by clicking 'like' on the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service Facebook page or following @CheshireFire on Twitter.
