November 1914 – local Events

Kingsley Burton gave a stirring sermon on the war to a large congregation who listened attentively at the Methodist chapel.

Nantwich Youth FC cancelled their remaining fixtures as many of the team had joined up.
Gt. Yarmouth beach was shelled.

Lantern slides of the war entitled 'The Christian Soldier' were shown in the Public Hall to raise funds for the Soldiers and Sailors fund. The slides were manipulated by Mr J Purcell.

Eleven men were fined at Crewe for their part in the attacks on German Pork Butchers. The price of beer went up by 1d.

There was a whist drive and dance – to raise funds for the Red cross. 120 people attended and the Hall presented a gay appearance with bunting, lace curtains, plants and flowers arranged by the Head Gardner of Hankelow Hall – the dancing went on until 4am!

The newspapers publish the names of Audlem men signed up or at the front, there are over 50 names (See archive section).

112 wounded soldiers arrived at Crewe Station and were ferried to local hospitals including Peckforton Castle. There was fundraising to support the Belgian refugees.
